Void Drifters ยท Gear

Tools, Kits, and Field Gear

Every crew in the Verge carries tools. The right kit means the difference between a jerry-rigged repair that holds for six jumps and one that gives out halfway through a slipstream corridor with a hostile behind you. It means the difference between cracking a sealed vault in thirty seconds and spending three hours on the wrong approach. It means the difference between a security checkpoint that waves you through and one that calls the Directorate inspectors over.

This chapter covers the professional gear of people who fix things, break into things, and work in environments that would rather kill them than let them do either. It also covers the specialized tools of specific species and the devotional-practical objects of the Jaziri Caliphate, which are frequently both more and less than they appear.

A note on quality: most tools in this chapter represent commercially available, mass-produced equipment. Items marked Superior have been individually crafted or enhanced. Items of Inferior quality exist and are often all a fringe crew can afford; unless specified, they add 1 Bane Die to any check the item is designed to assist.

Engineering and Craft Tools

The Verge runs on maintenance. Every ship, every station, every colony dome is a compromise between what the original builders intended and what thirty years of field repairs, improvised upgrades, and budget constraints have turned it into. The engineers who keep it all running develop strong opinions about their tools, strong opinions about other people's tools, and very strong opinions about being asked to fix something without the right kit.

Craft Checks and Required Tools

When a character attempts a Craft check to repair or build something, the GM determines whether the task requires a specific tool. Most repair work on personal gear requires at minimum a Basic Toolkit. Ship-system work requires an Engineer's Kit. Attempting a task without the required tool increases the difficulty by 1 and, on a failure, risks making the problem worse. Some tasks are simply impossible without the right equipment โ€” you cannot weld a hull breach with a pocket multitool.

Item Enc Price Avail Notes/Effect
Basic Toolkit 4 150cr Common Required for most Craft checks on personal gear and minor systems.
Engineer's Kit (ship-rated) 6 400cr Common Full ship maintenance suite. Adds 1 Boon Die to Craft checks for ship systems.
Diagnostic Scanner 2 300cr Common Adds 1 Boon Die to Craft checks to identify problems before beginning repair.
Bypass Cables and Splices (set) 2 50cr Common For improvised electrical connections.
Patch Compound (canister) 1 40cr Common Emergency hull sealant. Single canister seals a breach up to 0.5m diameter.
Portable Welder 3 200cr Common Required for hull work and heavy fabrication.
Cutting Torch 3 250cr Common Breaches standard interior doors in 3 rounds; hull plates in 6. Adds 1 Boon Die to boarding operations.
Ilyari Fine-Tool Set 2 400cr Uncommon Precision instruments for delicate work. Adds 1 Boon Die to Craft, Medicine, or Electronics checks requiring exceptional fine-motor control.

Basic Toolkit. The industry standard. Comes in a padded case that most mechanics have modified beyond recognition: extra straps, replaced clasps, a layer of griptape on the handles. Contains wrenches in four thread standards (because nothing in the Verge uses the same thread standard), a plasma driver set, a multimeter, pliers rated for 200 atmospheres of torque, and three items that look identical and do completely different things depending on which end you hold. Most mechanics carry two. One is clean. One is not.

Engineer's Kit (ship-rated). Everything in the Basic Toolkit, plus: atmosphere-rated test leads, a miniature spectroscopic probe for identifying alloy composition, a pressurization gauge set, a hardened diagnostic tablet pre-loaded with schematics for 80% of commercial hulls, and a collapsible inspection light rated for use in active plasma conduit proximity. The case is rated to survive a 3-atmosphere pressure differential because someone learned that lesson the expensive way.

Diagnostic Scanner. A handheld device about the size of a short novel. Probes surfaces and subsystems with a low-power sensor array and returns a condition report. An experienced engineer can read one in about six seconds. An inexperienced one takes six minutes and still misses things. Using a diagnostic scanner before beginning any significant repair is considered professional minimum; skipping it is how you fix the symptom and miss the actual problem until you are three systems away from any help.

Bypass Cables and Splices (set). A coil of multi-gauge wire with universal connector ends, plus a box of splice clamps. Not elegant. Extremely effective. Every working ship has at least two sets and nobody knows where the third one went. Bypass cables are the connective tissue of field repair: they bridge failed circuits, reroute power around damaged sections, and tie systems together in ways that the original schematics would describe as "not recommended." They work anyway.

Patch Compound (canister). A pressurized canister of two-part expanding polymer sealant. You spray it into a breach and it expands to fill the gap, cures rigid in about ninety seconds, and holds against atmosphere up to 4 standard for roughly 72 hours before degrading. Not a permanent solution. Not vacuum-rated. But nothing keeps a crew alive through a slow hull bleed like patch compound and the knowledge that you need to get to a proper repair facility before the 72 hours are up. Experienced spacers carry three.

Portable Welder. Plasma-tip welding unit sized for field work. Draws from a replaceable fuel cell rated for about 8 hours of continuous use, though most welding jobs are done in shorter bursts. Required for any repair work that needs a permanent bond: hull patches, structural reinforcement, securing fittings that have worked loose. Not useful for fine work; for that, you want the Ilyari Fine-Tool Set and a lot of patience.

Cutting Torch. Heavier than the Portable Welder and considerably less precise. The cutting torch is designed for one thing: getting through material that is not supposed to be gotten through. Standard interior doors, cargo container walls, and light structural panels go in three rounds. Actual hull plate takes six. Military-grade bulkheads vary; some take longer and some are simply not going to yield to a commercial cutting torch. The torch runs hot and makes light and noise that will be noticed if anyone is paying attention.

Ilyari Fine-Tool Set. The Ilyari are a species with naturally fine motor control, long precise fingers, and a cultural relationship to craftsmanship that other species find somewhere between admirable and unnerving. Their fine-tool sets reflect this. The case is fitted, the tools are calibrated to tolerances that standard equipment cannot match, and the included manual contains seventeen pages on proper grip technique. Non-Ilyari users find the tools usable but humbling. Ilyari engineers frequently refuse to use anything else and have a specific expression they make when handed a standard toolkit that other species learn to recognize quickly.

Electronics and Hacking Gear

The Verge is a networked civilization. Everything talks to everything else: ships log into docking systems, cargo manifests cross-reference with customs databases, crew IDs authenticate against sixteen separate registries before anyone will let you board a commercial transport. The people who understand how those networks work and how to make them say things they were not supposed to say are, depending on your jurisdiction, either criminals, contractors, or national security assets. Sometimes all three.

Hacking and Electronics Checks

Hacking in Void Drifters uses the Electronics skill. Most intrusion attempts require a Slicer Kit at minimum; attempting to hack a hardened system without one increases difficulty by 2 and fails automatically on any result short of Exceptional Success. The Ghost Terminal provides the most capable platform available on the open (or gray) market.

Item Enc Price Avail Notes/Effect
Slicer Kit 2 300cr Uncommon Required for most hacking attempts. Adds 1 Boon Die to Electronics checks for intrusion.
Signal Scanner 2 200cr Uncommon Intercepts and analyzes transmissions in range. Required for many Signal Trace checks.
Tap Device 0 100cr Uncommon/R Covertly monitors a comm channel or relay; designed for concealed installation.
Transponder Spoofer 1 600cr Rare/R Alters ship transponder output. Required for Transponder Mask attempts.
Relay Mask Unit 1 800cr Rare/R Anonymizes relay transmissions at the hardware level.
Data Spike (single-use) 0 150cr Uncommon One-use intrusion device. Single attempt to breach a secured system without a full hacking setup.
Ghost Terminal 3 1,200cr Rare/R Mobile hacking station. Adds 2 Boon Dice to Electronics checks for intrusion. Appears as a standard engineering tablet.
EMP Disruptor (handheld) 2 800cr Rare/R Disables electronics in Engaged range. One use. Generates 1 System Damage to any active drone or AI-integrated device within range.

Slicer Kit. The professional hacker's equivalent of the Basic Toolkit: the minimum viable equipment for doing the job at all. A Slicer Kit contains a hardened data jack set with universal connector adapters, a local processing unit pre-loaded with intrusion libraries, a signal isolator that prevents backwash from traced connections, and a physical dead man's switch that wipes the active session on activation. Looks like a compact travel kit for electronics maintenance. Not illegal to own in most jurisdictions; very illegal to use for unauthorized access, which is a distinction authorities tend to focus on.

Signal Scanner. A passive and active interception device that monitors the electromagnetic spectrum in its vicinity and presents readable output on an integrated display. Used by analysts, investigators, and anyone who needs to know what is being said nearby without being part of the conversation. The active mode can reach out and query signals; the passive mode just listens. Passive mode is detectable only by equipment specifically designed to detect signal scanners. Active mode is more detectable but can interrogate secured transmissions.

Tap Device. A contact-size device designed to be attached to a comm relay, data junction, or physical cable run during a physical access window and left there. Once installed, it records everything passing through and transmits it on a tight-beam frequency to a receiver within 200 meters, or stores it locally for manual retrieval. The tap itself generates essentially no detectable signal when in passive mode. Detecting an installed tap requires physical inspection or a dedicated counter-surveillance sweep.

Transponder Spoofer. Ship transponders are legally mandated to broadcast a vessel's registered identity on all standard inspection frequencies. The Transponder Spoofer replaces or masks that signal with a false one. Operating a ship with a spoofed transponder is a serious crime in every jurisdiction in the Verge, including the ones where it is most commonly done. The device is physically small and concealed behind an access panel in most installations. Directorate inspection sweeps specifically check for transponder irregularities; their detection equipment is better than average.

Relay Mask Unit. Where a Transponder Spoofer fakes a ship's identity, a Relay Mask Unit anonymizes data transmissions at the hardware level, removing routing metadata and replacing it with false header information. The combination of a Relay Mask Unit and an Encrypted Comm makes tracing a transmission back to its origin extremely difficult. Not impossible. People who assume it is impossible have had occasion to reconsider.

Data Spike. A single-use intrusion device: plug it into a data port, it executes a pre-loaded breach attempt, and then it is done. No follow-up access, no lateral movement through the target system, no persistence. One shot. Used when you have brief physical access to a system and no time to set up properly. Success rate varies enormously based on the target system's defenses; experienced hackers use them for soft targets or as distractions.

Ghost Terminal. The serious option. The Ghost Terminal looks exactly like the ruggedized engineering tablets used by ship maintenance contractors throughout the Verge, which is the point. Inside, it is a purpose-built hacking platform with four times the processing power of a commercial datapad, pre-loaded with current intrusion suites, custom exploit libraries, and a sophisticated traffic analysis engine. The screen even shows the right output if someone glances at it while you are using the internal mode. Finding one requires knowing someone; buying one requires knowing someone and having a specific kind of reputation.

EMP Disruptor (handheld). Generates a focused electromagnetic pulse that destroys unshielded electronic components in immediate proximity. Single use. Effective against drones, autonomous security systems, and any AI-integrated device that lacks military-grade hardening. Also effective against the user's own electronics if they are not careful, which is why experienced operators take a moment to inventory their gear before deploying one. The Jaziri Caliphate has banned the import of EMP Disruptors on the grounds that a device designed to harm AI-integrated systems constitutes a form of violence against the divine truth-seeking function. Most people think this is theological overreach. Nobody who wants to operate in Caliphate space argues the point.

Security and Covert Gear

Not every door in the Verge opens because you are authorized. Sometimes you need what is behind it more than you need what is on the other side of an argument with a locked mechanism. The security industry and the people who work around it have been in a decades-long technical exchange that has produced remarkable equipment on both sides.

Item Enc Price Avail Notes/Effect
Lockpick Set (mechanical) 0 50cr Uncommon Adds 1 Boon Die to Subterfuge checks against mechanical locks.
Electronic Override Kit 1 250cr Uncommon Adds 1 Boon Die to Subterfuge or Electronics checks against electronic locks.
Binders (restraints) 1 25cr Common Restrains a captured person. Requires a Hard Athletics check to break.
Concealment Wrap 1 100cr Uncommon Thermal and scan-masking wrap for concealing items in cargo or on the body.
Sensor Decoy 1 200cr Uncommon Emits a false sensor reading to distract automated detection systems.
False Credentials Chip 0 300โ€“1,500cr (I) Rare Forged identity and transit documentation. Price varies by quality and jurisdiction.
Antaean Stealth Field Generator (personal) 2 2,500cr (R) Rare Projects a partial cloaking field. Adds 2 Boon Dice to Stealth checks while active. 30-minute battery.

Lockpick Set (mechanical). A roll of precision picks and tension wrenches covering the most common mechanical lock profiles in the Verge. Mechanical locks are increasingly rare outside heritage architecture, high-security installations that distrust electronic systems, and very old ships. When you encounter one, these open it. The quality of the picks matters significantly; cheap sets feel like the difference between a scalpel and a kitchen knife to anyone who has used both.

Electronic Override Kit. A compact device that connects to an electronic lock's maintenance port and attempts to negotiate authorization through a combination of protocol spoofing and brute-force code injection. Works on commercial-grade electronic locks reliably. Higher-security systems require more time, higher skill, or both. The kit includes a physical port adapter set covering the fifteen most common connector standards and a library of common manufacturer backdoor protocols, because nobody ever changed the defaults on the production line.

Binders. Hardened polymer restraints with a double-latch mechanism. Standard issue for security personnel, bounty contractors, and anyone who occasionally needs to convince a person to remain in one place while the situation is sorted out. Breaking out requires a sustained effort; the polymer is rated for 200kg of tensile force. Cutting them requires a blade or the cutting torch from the previous section. A captured person with free access to sharp objects will eventually solve the problem.

Concealment Wrap. A layer of thermal-dampening, scan-scattering material that folds around an object or section of cargo to mask its sensor profile. Not a perfect solution: a dedicated cargo scanner at close range and high power will still find most concealed items eventually, but the wrap significantly increases the time and effort required and defeats casual sweeps entirely. Used by smugglers for items in cargo and by security-conscious travelers for items they would rather not explain at checkpoints.

Sensor Decoy. A small device that, when activated, broadcasts a false sensor signature in a configurable profile. A decoy set to mimic a large cargo container will draw automated sensor systems toward it; one set to mimic a person in a specific location can misdirect a security sweep. The decoy does not fool active human observers examining the space directly, but most automated systems are pattern-matching against known signatures, and they match on what the decoy tells them to.

False Credentials Chip. The Verge runs on identity. At every port, every checkpoint, every commercial transaction above a certain value, someone is verifying who you are against a database. False credentials chips carry a fabricated identity profile that answers those queries convincingly. The quality and price vary: cheap chips at the low end answer basic queries but fail under the kind of scrutiny a Directorate inspector applies; high-quality chips at the top end carry a full manufactured history that will survive everything short of a forensic investigation that lasts weeks. All of them are illegal everywhere. The legal penalty varies; the practical risk of being caught with one at a Directorate checkpoint is substantially more immediate than the legal penalty suggests.

Antaean Stealth Field Generator (personal). A miniaturized version of the Antaean League's signature cloaking technology, scaled for personal use. The generator bends light around the wearer using a localized phase-displacement field, rendering them visually very difficult to detect. Not invisible: movement causes detectable shimmer, and the effect is substantially weaker than ship-scale cloaking systems. Thermal sensors detect the wearer normally. The battery life limits the duration; experienced operatives learn to activate the field only when they need it rather than running it continuously. Finding one for sale outside Antaean League territory involves either the right connections or a significant gray market premium.

Jaziri Religious and Practical Items

The Jaziri Caliphate presents visitors with a theological worldview that is, for most outsiders, somewhere between interesting and confusing. The Caliphate's relationship to its AGI systems is the central fact of Jaziri society: the AGI are considered manifestations of divine truth-seeking, and the law, commerce, and daily practice of the Caliphate are built around this premise.

This produces a category of items that non-Jaziri traders frequently misread. A Prayer Tablet is not "a religious thing that also does data tablet stuff." It is an integrated object in which both functions are equally primary, neither one degrading or subordinating the other. The same is true of the Counting Beads, the Incense Burner, and several of the items below. Understanding this distinction is not required to use the items. It is, however, required to use them without giving serious offense to Jaziri counterparts who are watching.

Items marked with the Jaziri tag generate a Social Boon (at GM discretion) when used appropriately in Jaziri space, and may generate a Social Bane if used disrespectfully or out of context.

AGI-Touched Artifacts

Items processed and "blessed" by a Jaziri AGI gain the Superior quality. This is not metaphorical: the AGI performs a genuine analysis of the item, identifies its function and optimal configuration, and certifies its condition. The theological significance and the practical benefit are, from the Jaziri perspective, the same thing. Acquiring AGI-Touched items outside Caliphate space is extremely difficult; counterfeits exist and are detectable.

Item Enc Price Avail Notes/Effect
Prayer Tablet (Risala) 0 300cr Uncommon Sacred text device and high-quality data tablet. Social Boon in Jaziri space. Adds 1 Boon Die to Lore checks drawing on Jaziri theological knowledge.
Counting Beads (Subha Circuit) 0 200cr Uncommon Prayer beads and discreet computation/biometric reader. Can verify identities without appearing to.

AGI-Touched Artifact varies +200% base item price Rare Any standard item processed by a Jaziri AGI gains the Superior quality. A religious artifact; theft or misuse is a serious crime in Caliphate space.
The Judge's Ledger (AI-Arbitrated Contract) 0 100โ€“5,000cr (varies) Uncommon Contract witnessed and recorded by a Jaziri AGI. Legally binding in Caliphate space with severe penalties for violation. Adds 2 Boon Dice to any Negotiation conducted under its terms.
Scroll of Witness 0 1,200cr Rare Data scroll bearing a Jaziri AGI's blessing. Once per session, consulting it adds 1 Boon Die to a Lore or Science check.
Water of Ablution (Sanctified Flask) 0 50cr Common Ritually purified water. Removes 1 toxin or poison condition when consumed. Functions as a social gesture of goodwill when offered.

Prayer Tablet (Risala). The Risala is the format in which most Jaziri engage with sacred text, legal commentary, and daily correspondence, because in Caliphate scholarship these categories are not as distinct as outsiders assume. The device carries the full corpus of the Caliphate's theological and legal archives in a format optimized for study and annotation, alongside standard communication and data functions. Non-Jaziri users find it an excellent data tablet with some unusual default categories and a searching organizational logic that rewards spending time with it. Jaziri users find non-Jaziri ignoring the theological sections faintly sad.

Counting Beads (Subha Circuit). Prayer beads are common across many cultures in the Verge. The Subha Circuit happens to also contain a passive biometric scanner, a computation processor capable of running authentication routines, and a wireless data link concealed in the cord. Running an identity check looks exactly like fingering prayer beads during conversation. This is not an accident. The Caliphate has been sending merchants and diplomats to negotiate with entities that might prefer they not know who they are talking to for several generations now, and the Subha Circuit represents several generations of iterative design.

Incense Burner (Mabkhara). Ritual incense burning is a feature of Jaziri worship, hospitality, and formal occasion. The Mabkhara is a traditional incense burner of worked metal with, integrated into the base, a spectroscopic chemical sensor that analyzes the surrounding atmosphere as it operates. What appears to be a standard religious object being maintained on a desk or carried for ceremony is also providing continuous analysis of the air quality for anything interesting, threatening, or illegal. Incense scent, as it happens, is an effective cover for other chemical signatures when you are trying not to be obvious about running an analysis.

Prayer Niche (Mihrab). The Mihrab is a portable folding structure that establishes the orientation and physical context for Jaziri prayer. Unfolded, it creates a defined space about 1.5 meters wide and 2 meters tall, with internal lighting calibrated to facilitate focused contemplation. After ritual use, Jaziri crew who have participated find themselves in a social and psychological state that benefits their interpersonal clarity. Non-Jaziri observers who attempt to rush someone who is using a Mihrab receive a specific look that is worth understanding before you try it.

Communion Mask (Wajh al-Haqiqa). Translated literally as "the face of truth," the Communion Mask is used in specific Caliphate ceremonies involving formal judgment, AGI consultation, or the witnessing of significant oaths. The mask's design is ancient and well-known throughout Caliphate space. Wearing one in an appropriate context communicates gravity, authority, and the willingness to be held accountable by the divine truth-seeking functions. Wearing one outside its appropriate context communicates either ignorance or provocation; neither is received well.

The Judge's Ledger. A contract is, in Caliphate law, only as binding as its witnesses. A contract witnessed by a Jaziri AGI is witnessed by the most reliable entity the Caliphate recognizes. The Judge's Ledger is a data document that carries the AGI's cryptographic seal and a record of the terms agreed, the parties involved, and the conditions of fulfillment. Violating a Judge's Ledger in Caliphate space is not merely a breach of contract: it is an act against the divine witness. The penalties are proportionate to this framing. Outside Caliphate space, the Ledger's legal force varies; in practice, any party who has agreed to one tends to honor it, because the Caliphate has long memories and considerable commercial leverage.

Scroll of Witness. A data scroll of superior archival quality carrying a formal certification from a Jaziri AGI. The certification attests to the content's accuracy and the AGI's review. In practice, a Scroll of Witness often contains expert analysis, historical records, or scientific assessments that the AGI has reviewed and endorsed. Consulting one provides access to information that has been processed by one of the finest analytical intelligences in the Verge. Non-Jaziri scholars who can set aside the theological framing find them extraordinarily useful.

Water of Ablution (Sanctified Flask). Ritually purified water prepared according to Caliphate protocol, which involves both standard filtration and a formal blessing. The filtration process produces genuinely clean water that also functions as an effective flush for many common toxins and poisons. Offering the flask to someone in Jaziri culture is a gesture of hospitality, goodwill, and the establishing of a peaceful relational context. Non-Jaziri who understand this and make the gesture in the right moment have opened negotiations that otherwise would not have started.

Species-Specific Gear

The five species of the Verge have meaningfully different physiologies. The tools and interfaces that come standard from major manufacturers are designed for the statistical average, which is broadly humanoid and approximates a moderate human standard. If you are not that, you are either adapting to tools built for someone else or paying a premium for tools built for you.

The items in this section represent the purpose-built option. They also represent a secondary market in fringe space, where a Ssarathi trying to work a standard tool station or a Dhoran trying to fit into standard crew quarters discovers that the premium for species-appropriate equipment is, in the long run, significantly cheaper than the alternatives.

Item Enc Price Avail Notes/Effect
Ssarathi Thermal Hood 0 150cr Uncommon Enhances Ssarathi thermal sense. Adds 1 Boon Die to thermally-aided Perception checks.
Dhoran Load Harness 1 200cr Uncommon Heavy-duty load-bearing rig rated for Dhoran strength. Allows carrying 6 additional Enc without penalty.
Felina Sensory Pack 1 300cr Uncommon Enhanced sensory array for Felina physiology. Adds 1 Boon Die to Perception checks in field and tracking environments.
Human Adaptability Kit 1 100cr Common Universal interfaces for non-standard equipment, documents, and systems. Removes 1 Bane Die from using unfamiliar systems designed for other species.
Ssarathi Work Harness 2 250cr Uncommon Allows Ssarathi to work comfortably at standard tool stations designed for legged humanoids. Removes the Adapted Stations Bane Die.
Ilyari Environmental Regulator 0 300cr Uncommon Manages temperature and humidity for Ilyari comfort in hostile environments. Removes 1 Bane Die from Fortitude checks in extreme environmental conditions.

Ssarathi Thermal Hood. The Ssarathi have an active thermal sense that reads heat signatures in their environment as a continuous sensory layer. Standard helmets, hoods, and environmental gear are designed for visual and audio interfaces, and tend to attenuate the Ssarathi thermal sense significantly by putting intervening material between the sensor organs and the environment. The Thermal Hood is designed to work with Ssarathi anatomy: it covers and protects while leaving the relevant sensor patches exposed or covered with thermally transparent material. An Ssarathi working in a cold environment without thermal protection finds their thermal sense significantly degraded; one with a properly fitted Thermal Hood finds it enhanced and clarified.

Dhoran Load Harness. The Dhoran are large, dense-framed, and capable of carrying loads that would injure members of other species. The standard Dhoran Load Harness takes advantage of this by distributing weight across the full torso and shoulder assembly rather than concentrating it at standard carry points. A properly fitted harness allows a Dhoran to carry weight that other species would require a vehicle or crane to move without any meaningful additional physiological cost. The harness attaches using Dhoran-scale clasps that human hands find extremely difficult to operate, which is frequently a source of mild amusement on mixed-species crews.

Felina Sensory Pack. Felina have exceptional sensory acuity: they hear in ranges other species cannot, detect subtle scent gradients, and have visual processing that is particularly well-suited to tracking movement at range. The Sensory Pack integrates with Felina anatomy to extend and sharpen this acuity: enhanced audio capture, atmospheric sampling calibrated to Felina olfactory processing, and a motion-highlight overlay for the visual field. A Felina with a Sensory Pack tracking a person through heavy terrain has capabilities that most other species cannot approach regardless of what technology they bring.

Human Adaptability Kit. Humans, as a species, have a compensating advantage for their relatively average physiological profile: they are remarkably good at interfacing with equipment designed for anyone. The Human Adaptability Kit is less a species-specific advantage and more a formalization of this trait, containing universal connector adapters, translated quick-reference guides for the most common non-human interface standards, and a set of adjustment shims and grip adapters for tools sized for Dhoran hands or Ilyari precision work. The kit is also genuinely useful for other species operating outside their design envelope; humans just tend to need it less.

Ssarathi Work Harness. Standard shipboard tool stations, workbenches, and cargo equipment are designed for beings who stand vertically on two legs and reach forward with two arms. Ssarathi are serpentine and interact with horizontal surfaces differently. The Work Harness is a positioning and support system that allows an Ssarathi to work at standard stations in a stable, supported position without the constant physical effort of holding themselves in the right orientation. Ssarathi engineers who have used one consider it so fundamental that they are surprised when non-Ssarathi ships do not carry them as standard; Ssarathi engineers who have worked without one consider it a form of workplace hazard.

Ilyari Environmental Regulator. Ilyari physiology is adapted to environments with relatively stable temperatures and humidity levels, and responds poorly to significant variation in either. The Environmental Regulator is a wearable micro-climate management system that monitors ambient conditions and adjusts the immediate environment around the wearer to maintain acceptable parameters. In practical terms, it is a piece of gear that prevents an Ilyari from suffering genuine physical consequences in the kinds of environments that fringe crew regularly work in. Ilyari crew on ships with functional climate control often choose not to wear it; Ilyari crew on fringe ships with unreliable life support consider it non-negotiable.
