Known space has no agreed-upon map. Every major power publishes its own charts, files its own route claims, and applies its own names to the same corridors, systems, and borders. Irnan survey data rarely matches Funtari clan charts. Shoiyan academic editions show detail near the Concord core and nearly nothing elsewhere. Jaziri navigational records treat certain regions as undisclosed by faith, not accident. Antaean commercial atlases are accurate where the money goes and blank where it does not.
This atlas uses a consistent framework applied across all of known space. The zone classification system, corridor notation, relay coverage tiers, and accuracy codes described in this chapter appear throughout every section of this book. Learning them here means reading the rest of the atlas without stopping.

This chapter covers spatial notation only: what the categories mean, how corridors are referenced, and how to read an entry without misunderstanding what the atlas is and is not claiming.

Sectors and Zones
Each major power labels the same volume of space differently. The Irnan Directorate divides its territory into administrative sectors named for oversight bureaus. The Funtari Confederacy uses clan-territory designations that shift with inheritance disputes. The Shoiyan Concord publishes biospheric survey grids named for ecological classification codes. The Jaziri Caliphate uses pilgrimage route designations and holy district markers. The Antaean League uses commercial zone names tied to insurance underwriting districts.
None of these systems map onto each other cleanly. Borders do not agree. Names differ. A region the Directorate calls a secure sector the Funtari clans describe as contested territory and the League's underwriters classify as an elevated-risk zone.
This atlas uses a zone classification system applied uniformly across all of known space. It does not replace any power's internal terminology. It provides a consistent framework for readers who need to understand a location regardless of which power's chart they are holding.
Zone Types
Power Core. A region of firm authority where a single power exercises consistent control. Power Cores have functioning law enforcement, full nav beacon coverage, maintained relay networks, active customs infrastructure, and reliable emergency response. Permits, credentials, and documentation requirements are consistently enforced. Services are available at market prices, and port facilities meet standard specifications.
Being in a Power Core means interacting with the full bureaucratic and enforcement apparatus of whoever governs it. That can be welcome or oppressive depending on the crew's circumstances and paperwork.
Frontier. A region where a power has nominal authority but thin presence. Frontier zones have partial nav beacon coverage, intermittent relay service, irregular patrol presence, and inconsistent enforcement. Laws technically apply, but enforcement depends on whether a patrol is close enough to care. Services exist in larger settlements but may be unavailable on smaller worlds or stations.
Frontier zones are where the power's reach becomes more theoretical than practical. A crew with outstanding warrants in Irnan space may operate in Irnan frontier systems for months without encountering anyone who checks.
Frontier Contested. A Frontier zone where two or more powers have overlapping claims. Each power maintains some presence, but neither exercises consistent control. Patrols from rival authorities may both operate in the same system. Permit standards conflict. A ship valid by one power's inspection may be detained by the other's.
Frontier Contested zones are legally and operationally complicated. A crew may clear Irnan customs and still be boarded by Funtari clan enforcers an hour later. Knowing which authority controls the specific station a ship is docked at often matters more than knowing which power claims the system overall.
Disputed Corridor. A specific route, rather than a broader zone, where two or more powers have competing claims over corridor access, patrol rights, transit permits, or relay control. The surrounding systems may have clearer authority structures; the corridor itself does not. Disputed corridors often feature blockades, rival inspection stations at different points along the route, and wildly inconsistent permit requirements.
Unclaimed. A region or system outside recognized power control, without a formal competing claim. Unclaimed space is not lawless in the sense of being empty: it may have ports, communities, salvagers, corporate operations, and local authorities. It is lawless in the sense that no recognized interstellar power enforces law there. Local authorities may maintain their own order, but no power stands behind their rules.
Dark / Dead. A region that is either unsurveyed or has no reliable return traffic. Dark zones may exist because no power has sent survey crews into them. Dead zones are regions where ships have entered and not returned reliably enough to produce usable charts. Both may contain something worth finding. Both may contain something that explains why traffic stopped.
Meridian Verge (Special). The Meridian Verge is a designated special zone: a shared buffer region maintained under treaty by the Irnan Directorate, Funtari Confederacy, and Jaziri Caliphate. No single power governs it. A joint treaty framework nominally applies, but enforcement depends on which ships are present. The Verge receives its own full treatment in the Disputed Borders chapter.

Slipstream Corridors
Interstellar travel in known space depends entirely on slipstream corridors: naturally occurring channels in folded space, anchored between distant black holes, through which ships can cross interstellar distances in days or weeks rather than centuries. Corridors are not roads built by civilization. They are rivers discovered by it. Governments chart them, corporations profit from them, navies patrol them, and when the river moves, maps become history.
Ships do not travel from one black hole to another. They enter a corridor where it passes close enough to a star system for local gravity to weaken the boundary between normal space and Slipspace. These weakened boundary regions are called seams. A seam is not a fixed gate. It is a moving arc in the outer portion of a star system, shifting as planets orbit, stars drift, and the corridor itself slowly changes position over decades and centuries.
For an established route, locating the seam is routine work, handled by nav beacons, commercial charts, and directive navigation AI. For a frontier or newly surveyed route, finding the seam may require active scans, updated models, and a skilled navigator willing to accept real risk.
How Corridors Are Referenced in This Atlas
Every corridor record in this atlas uses the same notation, drawn from the standard route record format.
Origin and Destination are the two nearest mapped systems the corridor connects. Because corridors arc and bend, a single corridor may pass near several systems along its length. The atlas records each segment as a separate route pairing.
Class is the corridor's capacity and character, described in the Corridor Classes table below.
Capacity is the largest ship size the corridor carries safely and the ordinary traffic load it sustains. Class sets the ceiling; Capacity records what actually moves.
Stability is the current seam condition, which affects how reliably navigators can locate the crossing point and whether the route requires a Trial.
Travel Time is the typical transit duration for an ordinary ship under normal conditions. Faster drives and better navigators reduce this; unstable routes and heavy traffic can increase it.
Approach is the destination system's Approach value: Close, Standard, or Far. Travel Time ends at the seam; Approach covers the run from the standard exit arc to the dock. A Close destination puts the ship at Long on emergence. Standard and Far put it at Extreme, with a two-Interval or six-Interval outer leg. The Travel Band and Cruise rules are in the GM Guide chapter Routes, Travel, and Communication.
Relay Status indicates whether a phased relay station serves the route and what condition that coverage is in.
Control identifies which power, corporation, clan, or authority patrols and enforces permit requirements on this corridor.
Known Traits lists any significant route characteristics: fast transit, turbulence, shadowed approach, seasonal seam drift, or branching options.
Known Complications lists hazards travelers on this route have actually encountered, including patrol patterns, saturation risks, stellar events, and active blockades.
Corridor Classes
Corridors vary in the phase wake they can tolerate before traffic becomes hazardous. A massive freighter or capital warship may be physically capable of entering Slipspace but unable to use a narrow corridor safely. The issue is not whether the ship fits. The issue is whether the corridor can absorb its phase wake without becoming unstable for other traffic.

A well-traveled route can hold Established status for centuries. A lightly used colony route may shift to Fading within a generation. A stellar event, prolonged neglect, or corridor drift can push any route toward Lost faster than any power can respond.
What Stability Means for Travelers
An Established route is a known quantity. Traffic control stations, nav beacons, commercial data, and years of accumulated phase wakes make the seam easy to find. Most ships transit without incident.
A Maintained route requires attention but not heroics. Routine nav systems handle seam location under good conditions. Drift advisories should be checked before departure.
A Frontier route asks for a Astrogation Trial. The seam is real but not well-reinforced. A capable navigator working from current data has good odds. An overconfident one using stale charts does not.
A New route is genuinely dangerous. Someone charted it recently, but phase wakes are sparse, drift models are speculative, and the atlas entry may rest on a single survey report. Verify all data before using it.
A Fading route may still be usable, but each transit is less reliable than the last. Colonies dependent on Fading routes should not count on them indefinitely.
A Lost route is listed for historical and navigational context only. Do not attempt transit without a dedicated survey mission and an extraordinary crew.
Full Navigation Rules
Astrogation Trials, offset exits, forced entry, corridor saturation, and the full mechanics of complication are in the Vehicles Manual. This chapter defines spatial notation only. When this atlas describes a corridor as Frontier or Maintained, those terms carry exactly the meaning they carry in the Vehicles Manual.
Relay Stations and the Phased Network
Slipstream corridors move ships. Phased relay stations move information.
A relay station is a fixed installation built near an established seam. It transmits compressed data packets through the same Slipspace channels that ships use, but through a different process: phase-locked transmitters send bursts through calibrated corridor sections that do not require a ship-scale phase drive to maintain. Messages hop from relay to relay along the route, arriving at their destination faster than any ship carrying the same information in person.
In well-covered regions, news, financial records, port notices, orders, navigation updates, legal warrants, and diplomatic traffic all move through the relay network without anyone needing to carry a chip across the void. In poorly covered regions, an important message may reach the last relay station in the chain and then stop, waiting for a courier ship to finish the run.
Relay stations are built by powers, corporations, clan operators, and independent port authorities. Each builder uses different relay architecture. The five major powers run networks that are technically incompatible at the hardware level; a Funtari clan relay cannot directly exchange traffic with a Shoiyan Concord station without conversion hardware at the handoff point. The full implications of this fragmented network are covered in the Phased Relay Network chapter.
Coverage Tiers
This atlas uses three relay coverage tiers for every zone and system entry.
Full Coverage. Both relay transmission and relay reception work without interruption. Messages can be sent and received. Navigation updates are current. Financial traffic clears normally. This tier exists primarily in Power Core zones, on major Spine and Grand Channel corridors, and at significant stations throughout Frontier zones near power centers.
Partial Coverage. Some relay function exists but is limited. Common partial-coverage conditions include: one-direction only (can receive but not send, or vice versa), intermittent uptime, coverage only at specific stations rather than across the whole system, routing delays, or signal degradation that makes financial and legal traffic unreliable. Many Frontier zones and smaller stations operate at partial coverage.
No Coverage. No relay station serves this location, or whatever relay infrastructure exists is too damaged, too degraded, or too blockaded to pass traffic. No Coverage zones force travelers to rely on alternative communication methods.

What No Coverage Means for Travelers
A crew entering a No Coverage zone should assume the following: outbound messages cannot be sent until the ship returns to a relay-served system or meets a relay-carrying vessel. Inbound messages from outside are not received. Navigation updates from official beacon networks are delayed or absent. Financial transfers, warrant notifications, port clearances, and legal traffic do not arrive.
Travelers in No Coverage zones rely on stored charts, last-known data, and whatever information they carried in with them. They may emerge from a dark-space run to find weeks of news, warrants, market changes, and political events have accumulated that they know nothing about.
The practical consequence is that information becomes a cargo in No Coverage space. A courier carrying fresh charts, updated warrant lists, current relay traffic logs, or sealed diplomatic correspondence may be the most valuable thing moving through a dark region on any given day.
Transit Permits and Corridor Access
Not every corridor is open to every ship. Powers enforce access differently, with different permit systems, different levels of consistency, and very different consequences for traveling without the right documentation.
Open Corridors
Some corridors require no permits at all. These include:
- Corridors running through Unclaimed or Meridian Verge space with no patrol authority in regular attendance
- Commercial Lane corridors where the controlling power has waived permit requirements in favor of inspection-only enforcement
- Funtari clan corridors where the local holding has declared open transit for commercial traffic
- Corridors where no authority has the patrol capacity to enforce a permit requirement even if one technically exists on the books
An open corridor is not necessarily an unchecked one. Authorities may run inspection stations at seam exits without requiring advance permits: every ship is checked on emergence, and contraband in an open corridor is still illegal. The difference is that a crew does not need to file paperwork before entering.
Controlled Corridors
Controlled corridors require a transit permit issued by the controlling authority before the ship enters Slipspace. Common controlled categories include:
- Major Spine corridors running through Power Core zones
- Border corridors between two powers where both maintain inspection presence
- Routes near military installations, restricted research zones, or high-value industrial systems
- Grand Channel corridors under any power's authority
A permit specifies the ship, the transit dates, the declared cargo, the declared crew, and the destination system. Operating outside those parameters, even in minor ways, gives an inspector grounds for detention.
Permit Validity Across Powers
Permits are not transferable across political systems. An Irnan transit permit covering entry into Directorate space does not satisfy a Funtari checkpoint. A Jaziri corridor permit does not grant Antaean League transit rights on a connecting route. A Shoiyan Concord corridor clearance carries no weight at an Irnan inspection station on the next leg.
A ship moving through multiple powers on a single journey must carry documentation valid for each authority it encounters. Some border agreements create bilateral reciprocal permits, but these cover specific named corridors only and are listed individually in route records where they apply.
Traveling Without a Permit
A ship caught in a controlled corridor without a valid permit faces detention at the inspection station. Consequences vary by power.
The Irnan Directorate typically impounds the ship pending a permit review, levies a substantial fine, adds the registry to watchlists, and begins a cargo inspection that may result in additional charges.
The Funtari Confederacy responds depending on which clan controls the corridor. One holding might demand a fine and move on. Another might impound the ship as leverage for a negotiation. A third might escort the crew to the seam and refuse them return passage until a local guarantor vouches for them.
The Shoiyan Concord is thorough, quiet, and unhurried. A ship caught without a Concord corridor permit should expect a full biometric sweep, stack credential check, and detailed cargo scan before any resolution is offered.
The Jaziri Caliphate treats an unpermitted transit as a compliance failure subject to full religious-administrative review: cargo declaration, AI licensing, species certification, and a sponsor-record requirement before release.
The Antaean League prefers fines, insurance holds, and registry flags over physical detention, but its corporate license enforcement can freeze a ship's financial access until permits are regularized, which may accomplish the same result.
Survey Data and Accuracy
Every entry in this atlas carries an accuracy tier. Not all information comes from the same quality of source, and presenting uncertain data as firm fact costs lives.
How Regions Get Surveyed
Survey work in known space is funded by powers, corporations, academic institutions, and occasionally independent survey crews operating on speculation. A survey mission must determine whether a corridor passes near a system, where the seam arc currently lies, how stable the seam is, whether the route supports relay traffic, and whether the system is worth the danger of repeated access.
Survey data is not published evenly. Powers treat it as a strategic asset. A newly charted shortcut through unclaimed territory may be kept proprietary for years while the surveying power quietly develops its position before competitors know the route exists. Corporations file survey claims and sit on the data while raising capital. Academic records are sometimes published and sometimes quietly sold. Independent surveyors may sell their charts to whoever pays, distribute them through free-chart networks, or take them to the grave.
The result is that the atlas works from multiple source types, with very different reliability levels. The four accuracy tiers reflect this honestly.
Accuracy Tiers
(Surveyed). Data drawn from official multi-pass survey records, updated within the last generation by a recognized survey authority, and cross-referenced against at least two independent sources. Surveyed entries are as reliable as atlas data gets. That does not mean conditions are unchanged since the survey: a surveyed system with a marked relay station may have lost it to a raid or storm since the entry was written.
(Charted). Data drawn from commercial charts, government navigation records, or traffic-control reports covering an actively used route or system. Charted entries are probably accurate in broad strokes but may lack survey-grade detail on seam stability, hazard profiles, or secondary system features. Charted is the standard tier for most Power Core corridors and well-traveled Frontier routes.
(Rumored). Data drawn from secondhand reports, single-source survey attempts, trader accounts, or entries that could not be confirmed against an independent source. Rumored entries represent real information from real travelers, but the atlas cannot guarantee accuracy. Navigation decisions based on Rumored data should account for the possibility of significant error.
(Classified). Data suppressed by a controlling authority. A Classified entry means someone knows more than is shown here and has chosen not to share it. Classified entries appear when the existence of a system, route, or zone is public knowledge even if its specifics are not. Do not assume a Classified entry has nothing worth finding. Assume instead that the power marking it classified considers it worth protecting.

What a Survey Earns
A crew that charts a new route files its own record at one of these tiers. The tier depends on the work done, not on who did it.

A record filed at Rumored sells for a fraction of a Surveyed record and invites a better-equipped crew to follow it. The survey procedure, from corridor trace to filing, is in the GM Guide chapter Routes, Travel, and Communication.
Dark Space
Some regions are not dark because they have been surveyed and found empty. They are dark because the ships sent to look did not come back in usable numbers, or because no ship was ever sent at all.
This atlas does not omit dark regions. It labels them honestly.
A dark space entry consists of whatever information is actually available: the location of the volume relative to known corridors, the name or designation neighboring powers apply to it, the last known survey attempt and its outcome if recorded, any consistent rumors from travelers who have approached the edge, and an explicit statement of what is not known.
Dark space entries use the (Rumored) accuracy tier by default. When an entry is based on a single account or speculation only, it is labeled accordingly.
Entry Markers for Dark Regions
[DARK] marks an unsurveyed region with no reliable route access and no confirmed return traffic. The atlas lists it because it is real space adjacent to known routes, and travelers approaching from neighboring systems deserve to know it exists.
[DEAD] marks a region with historical traffic that has since failed. Ships once traveled there and returned. They no longer do with any reliability. The atlas notes the last known contact date when available.
[RUMOR ONLY] marks entries based entirely on accounts the atlas cannot independently verify. The information may be accurate. It may be garbled. It may be deliberate misdirection placed there by someone with an interest in keeping the region unexplored.
The Atlas's Limits
This atlas does not claim to be complete. Known space is large. Survey data is proprietary, stale, or simply absent for vast volumes. The zones, systems, corridors, and hazards in these pages represent the best available public information at the time of compilation.
If a route record says Rumored, plan for it to be wrong. If a zone entry says Dark, plan for the entry to be incomplete by definition. If a corridor record says Fading, do not stake a colony resupply run on it without sending a scout ship first.
The atlas is a starting point. The navigator, the captain, and the crew are responsible for what comes next.
