Not everything worth visiting has a sky.
The atlas contains thousands of inhabited and formerly inhabited structures that are not planets: orbital stations, mining platforms, relay nodes, research installations, industrial complexes, and the ruins of communities that tried to survive in space and did not. Asteroid belts produce resources that no planet can match. Dead colonies contain things that cannot be found anywhere else, because whatever was lost there never made it anywhere else.
This chapter catalogs the named stations, belt operations, and abandoned locations in the atlas, and addresses the practical realities of operating in environments that are either artificial by design or empty by accident.
Station Types
Stations vary enormously in purpose, population, size, and governance. The type classification below is a starting framework; many real stations combine elements of several types.
Relay Station
A relay station exists to maintain a node in the Phased Relay Network. It is typically small, technically staffed, and politically significant beyond its population. The power or corporation that controls a relay station controls information flow through that node: what messages are delayed, what is censored, what is prioritized, and what is logged.
Relay stations range from automated platforms with minimal maintenance crews to significant installations with commercial traffic, because ships traveling between systems often stop where the relay is. The relay and the port co-evolved in most established corridors.
Typical services: Message transmission, relay packet forwarding, basic fuel supply, emergency docking Typical authority: Power communications authority, corporate relay operator, or independent communications trust
Transit Hub
A transit hub is built around the flow of ships rather than around any productive function. It provides docking, refueling, cargo transfer, passenger services, and everything a ship needs between journeys without being the destination of any of those journeys.
Transit hubs grow where corridors intersect or where a route's seam arc is distant from anything commercially interesting. They become important because the alternative is no service at all, and ships that need fuel will pay for fuel.
Typical services: Full docking, fuel, cargo transfer, resupply, crew accommodation, commercial brokerage, repair services Typical authority: Port authority (power, corporate, or independent depending on location)
Industrial Platform
An industrial platform exists to produce something: ore processing, fuel refinement, ship component manufacturing, agricultural processing, pharmaceutical production. The production function drives the station's size, population, and political context.
Industrial platforms in power space are typically owned by corporations operating under state license. Industrial platforms in unclaimed space or frontier zones may be clan-operated, privately held, or cooperative-owned. The authority structure reflects who put up the money to build it.

Military Installation
A military installation serves the operational needs of a power's armed forces: fleet staging, weapons storage, training facilities, intelligence operations, or border control. Military installations are not generally open to civilian traffic.
When civilian ships dock at a military installation, it is because they have a contract, a crisis, or permission. The experience is one of credential scrutiny, restricted access, and the clear sense that the environment was not designed for people who are not supposed to be there.

Research Station
A research station exists to study something: astronomy, stellar phenomena, xenobiology, archaeology, physics, navigation anomalies, or classified projects that are not publicly named. Research stations range from small automated platforms to large installations with full scientific communities.
Research stations in power space operate under institutional authority: a university, a government research body, or a corporate R&D division. Research stations in frontier space may be privately operated, unaffiliated, or actively hiding their purpose.
Typical services: Research outputs (if the station trades in them), limited supply, possibly accommodation for affiliated researchers Typical authority: Research institution, government science body, corporate R&D, or private foundation
Orbital Colony
An orbital colony is a station built as a permanent home rather than as an operational facility. It has schools, social infrastructure, residential design, cultural institutions, and a population that intends to stay. Orbital colonies are what happens when a temporary station becomes permanent and the people stop treating it as temporary.
Typical services: Full commercial and residential services; colony supply chain; social infrastructure Typical authority: Colonial government or community administration
Derelict
A derelict is a station that has lost its active population but retains its physical structure. Some derelicts are recent and their original function is well-understood. Others are older and their history is partly or wholly unknown. All derelicts contain things that either were not worth taking when the population left or could not be taken for reasons that may still be present.
Derelicts are not automatically safe. They are not automatically clear of occupants. And they are not automatically available for salvage regardless of how they appear.
Named Stations
Kharos Assembly Station
Kharos Assembly system, Funtari Confederacy, transit hub and political center
The Kharos Assembly station is the closest thing the Funtari Confederacy has to a capital facility, though the Confederacy has a deliberate cultural resistance to calling it that. It is a large, mixed-function installation: part clan assembly hall, part commercial transit hub, part diplomatic facility, part mercenary contract market. The station orbits above Kharos Freehold and handles the traffic that the planet's surface cannot accommodate efficiently.

- A permanent Irnan diplomatic mission maintains a carefully neutral presence on the station; the mission's staff are extremely good at being simultaneously present and invisible
Merrinex Station
Glass Frontier, Irnan Directorate, relay and inspection hub
Merrinex Station appears in the Habitable Worlds chapter as the primary Glass Frontier crossing point. Its station profile follows.

Lunaris Orbital Complex
Lunaris system, Irnan Directorate, research and naval medicine
The Lunaris Orbital Complex is a multi-platform research and medical installation in the Lunaris system, one of the Directorate's most significant research installations outside the capital. The complex studies advanced medicine, materials science, and navigation theory, with separate platform sections maintaining operational separation between research programs. Naval medicine is the largest single section by budget; the complex handles advanced treatment for Directorate naval personnel and conducts research into the medical effects of extended slipstream travel.

Xanor Research Platform
Xanor system, Shoiyan Concord, advanced materials and sensor research
Xanor Research Platform is one of the Concord's highest-output research installations, focused on advanced sensor optics, materials science, and high-energy physics. The platform is large, well-funded, and operates in a Concord system with limited civilian access. Most of what Xanor produces is proprietary; the results feed into Concord manufacturing and defense programs.

- The platform's waste-processing systems periodically discharge materials that have trace signatures of the production processes inside; careful analysis of these signatures provides some reverse-engineering data, which is why several intelligence-affiliated ships make regular passes through the outer system

The Harrowspan Wreckfield

The Harrowspan wreckfield is detailed in the Freeports chapter as a community context. Its resource and extraction character follows.
The wreckfield is large by Verge standards: approximately forty kilometers of significant debris at its densest, with a much larger zone of dispersed fragments extending several thousand kilometers in the orbital plane. The dense section contains significant recoverable material from the Verge conflict period: hull plating, drive components, weapons systems in various states of integrity, sealed compartments with unknown contents, and scattered personal effects from the crews who did not survive.

- Salvage crews report occasional signs of prior recovery work in sections of the wreckfield that the collective has not assigned; someone has been in the wreckfield without community knowledge
The Nerezza Deep Belt
Nerezza system, Funtari Confederacy, deep extraction zone
The Nerezza system contains an unusually rich asteroid belt in the outer system, accessed primarily by Funtari clan extraction operations. The belt is deep-system and the approaches are slow from the inner seam; most crews running Nerezza extraction work are running extended operations that cycle in and out over weeks or months. The ore is high-grade and the yields are significant, which is why the Nerezza clan disputes over extraction rights are ongoing and occasionally violent.

The Thyron Industrial Belt
Thyron system, Antaean League, gray-market and industrial
Thyron is known in the atlas for its industrial leasing, gray-market yards, and salvage claims. Its belt operations are the primary activity that earned that reputation. The Thyron belt is less a resource zone and more an industrial recycling and modification facility distributed across several hundred kilometers of maintained platforms and mobile yards.
Ships are bought, sold, stripped, rebuilt, and relicensed here. Cargo is transferred between vessels without paperwork changing hands. Equipment that cannot be legally sold anywhere else changes ownership through transactions that are technically compliant with League commercial law and practically understood to be evading the intent of the relevant regulations.
Primary Activity: Ship acquisition and disposition, component strip and reuse, grey-market cargo transfer, equipment sales, hull modification Who Operates: Thyron Industrial Consortium (a League-chartered cooperative); numerous independent licensed yard operators; a selection of operators whose licenses have technical problems that nobody has formally noted Population: Approximately 22,000 across all belt platforms Typical Hazards: The platforms are well-maintained in the commercial zones and less well-maintained everywhere else; structural integrity in the outer sections is a reasonable concern; competing yard operators in the contested leasing zones create crew safety risks Notable:

- An independent salvage cooperative at Thyron maintains a database of ship identities, prior registrations, and modification histories going back approximately thirty years; the database is not public, is not official, and is very accurate
The Qorallis Outer Shoals
Qorallis system, Shoiyan Concord, pharmaceutical extraction zone
The outer orbital shoals of Qorallis are zones of low-density particulate matter with unusually high concentrations of organic compounds derived from the planet's rich biosphere. Shoiyan pharmaceutical extraction operations work the shoals using collection ships and processing platforms, harvesting materials that are then refined into pharmaceutical precursors for Concord medical manufacturing.

Dead Colonies
Dead colonies occupy a specific place in the atlas: they are the record of what did not work, and they contain the residue of that failure for anyone willing to go look.
The five dead colonies below span different causes, different eras, and different current states. What they share is that they were once inhabited places and are inhabited no longer, except by whatever moved in after the people left.
Murr Vale Settlement
Murr Vale system, Funtari Confederacy border zone
Murr Vale Settlement was an agricultural frontier colony established by a Funtari clan alliance approximately forty years ago. The soil was adequate, the climate moderate, and the early harvests justified the investment in infrastructure. What the settlement did not adequately factor was the contested nature of the surrounding space: Murr Vale sat in a zone of active clan boundary disputes, and the second generation of settlers inherited a political situation that the founders had assumed would resolve itself.
It did not. A clan dispute about extraction rights in the system's inner belt turned violent, and the settlement was caught between forces that treated it as a staging point and a leverage asset rather than as a community. The evacuation took three years and left behind significant infrastructure: farm buildings, storage facilities, agricultural equipment, and a water management system that is still functional because nobody had a reason to disable it.

Notable: The settlement's central storage complex contains a documented cache of clan records from the original colonization period, including documentation of the extraction rights dispute. At least one of the current claiming clans is known to want those records. At least one other party is known to want them not to be found.
Veylin Station
Veylin system, Shoiyan Concord outer zone, research derelict
Veylin Station was a Shoiyan Concord outer-system research installation that ceased operations approximately fifteen years ago under circumstances that have never been fully explained in public documentation. The official record states operational closure due to funding reallocation. The unofficial record includes a communications blackout that lasted six weeks before the closure announcement, a requirement that all departing personnel sign extended confidentiality agreements, and the fact that the Concord sealed the corridor access records for the period in question.
The station is physically intact. Its systems went into shutdown mode rather than being actively dismantled. The Concord maintains a nominal ownership claim but has not established active presence and has not authorized salvage operations.
What It Was: Advanced research installation, purpose not publicly documented; approximately 800 research and support staff Why Abandoned: Official: funding reallocation. Practical: unknown Current State: Systems in shutdown mode; structure intact; Concord ownership claim active; no active presence; two unauthorized access attempts known; one returned uneventfully, one did not return Salvage Status: Concord claims ownership and has not authorized salvage; salvage without authorization would be theft under Concord law and a violation of the freeport codes of any League or Antaean port the salvage was sold through Why Crews Go: Research equipment at Veylin is of Concord specification, which means it is significantly above commercial standard; the research data still resident on the station's servers, if recoverable, might be extraordinarily valuable to several different buyers; the circumstances of closure suggest there is something on the station that someone does not want discovered
Notable: The one unauthorized access attempt that returned brought back a single data cube with partial contents that was reportedly sold to three separate buyers through an intermediary who has since become very difficult to reach. What was on the cube is known to those buyers and not publicly established.
Carna Station
Carna system, Irnan Directorate outer zone, civil administration derelict
Carna Station was the administrative and commercial hub of the Carna system's outer settlements before a combination of corridor drift and corporate consolidation made the Carna route impractical. The seam arc that once served Carna shifted significantly enough that the transit time and difficulty made the system economically unviable compared to alternatives. The corporations withdrew their operations, the administrative staff relocated, and the remaining population mostly followed within five years.
The station is a civil-era facility: well-built, Irnan-standard infrastructure, designed for a thirty-year operational life. It has been empty for twelve years. It is not particularly mysterious. It is simply a well-made station in a system that became unreachable.
What It Was: Administrative and commercial hub for a multi-system outer Directoriate zone; approximately 15,000 at peak Why Abandoned: Corridor drift made the seam arc impractical; economic closure followed naturally Current State: Infrastructure intact but maintenance-deprived; artificial gravity offline in the outer ring sections; life support functional in core sections but filtering systems require attention; some flooding from a breached coolant line in the engineering deck Salvage Status: Irnan Directorate retains nominal ownership; salvage of personal property and non-structural equipment is in legal grey territory that several salvage operators have tested without serious consequence Why Crews Go: The administrative records in Carna Station's central database include the original civil documentation for the outer-zone settlements and the corporate withdrawal agreements; some of those agreements contain provisions that are still technically active and that specific parties would pay to have, or to not have surfaced
Notable: A Directorate archival team was supposed to retrieve the database contents seven years ago and did not make the trip. The data is still there. The archival team's failure to retrieve it was logged without explanation. Someone senior enough to close the matter apparently decided this was acceptable, which suggests the contents are either unimportant or the opposite.
Oris Venn Station
Oris Venn system, Funtari Confederacy outer zone, clan community derelict
Oris Venn Station was a clan farming and water-claim community that failed not through violence or external pressure but through the ordinary attrition of a frontier community whose population simply moved on. Oris Venn never had a crisis. It had a slow decline across two decades as the younger generation left for better opportunities, the older generation aged, and the community reached a population threshold below which the labor required to maintain the infrastructure exceeded what the remaining residents could provide.
The last families left nine years ago. They took what they could carry and left everything else.

Notable: The community's final record-keeper, an elderly Funtari woman named Sela Rath, maintained personal logs up to the day of departure that recorded the history of the community in detail unusual for a frontier settlement. Those logs were left behind. Her grandchildren know they exist and have been trying to hire someone to retrieve them for six years.
Hadrin Deep Platform
Hadrin system, Funtari Confederacy outer zone, mining installation derelict
Hadrin Deep Platform was an ore extraction installation in the outer Hadrin system that was abandoned during a Funtari clan military operation approximately twenty years ago. The platform's operators were contracted by a clan that lost a military confrontation badly enough that their assets were seized by the victors. The platform operators were not party to the conflict; they were simply working a contract when the contractor disappeared into a detention situation. They left when it became clear no one was going to pay them and the platform's consumables were running low.
The victorious clan that technically inherited the platform has never sent anyone to take possession. The legal situation involves enough layers of contested inheritance law that no one has been willing to spend the resources to resolve it.

Notable: The platform's security system is still active. It was left in operational mode by the departing personnel. The security authentication credentials are from twenty years ago and may or may not function with attempts to override. What the security system will do if it detects unauthorized presence is unknown because no one who has tried to find out has reported back.
Operating in Dead Space
Dead colonies and derelict stations are not safe environments. The specific hazards vary by location, but certain categories apply consistently.
Life Support
Atmospheric systems on derelicts have not been maintained. Filters degrade over years and decades. A station that was fully habitable when its population left may have CO2 levels that are tolerable, dangerous, or acutely dangerous depending on how long the filters have been unserviced and how well the original installation was built. A suit-sealed entry for initial assessment is the correct first step on any derelict.
Gravity in artificial environments may be offline, partially degraded, or inconsistent by section. Crew should expect microgravity conditions in unserviced sections even when some sections retain power.
Power availability is directly tied to the state of the reactor and the draw of whatever systems remain active. A derelict with a running security system has power. A derelict with a breached coolant line may have reactor shutdown as a safety response. The relationship between what is powered and what is safe is not always the expected one.
Structural Hazards
Maintenance-deprived structures accumulate hazards. Pressure differentials between sections degrade seals. Thermal cycling stresses joints. Micro-impacts from debris accumulate. A structure that shows no obvious damage from outside may have significant internal compromise.
Crew moving through unfamiliar derelict sections should treat bulkheads, floors, and ceilings as potentially compromised until demonstrated otherwise. The section that looks solid may not be. The corridor that appears clear may have a floor section that was load-bearing for a system that has since collapsed.
Competing Salvage Teams
A derelict that has value will attract interest from more than one direction. A crew that arrives at a location expecting to be alone should expect to be wrong some percentage of the time.
Competing salvage teams are not automatically hostile. They may be willing to negotiate access division, information sharing, or a joint operation. They may also be operating under instructions that make negotiation impractical. The correct first response to a competing presence in a derelict is information gathering, not confrontation; the question of who was there first and under what authority matters significantly for how the encounter should be handled.
Legal Ownership
A derelict has a legal owner in most cases. That owner's claim may be dormant, contested, unclear, or practically unenforceable, but it exists in some form unless the structure predates all current property law regimes.
Salvaging a derelict without the owner's authorization is theft under the law of whatever jurisdiction recognizes the owner's claim. The practical consequence depends on whether the owner is in a position to enforce the claim and whether the crew intends to sell the salvage through channels where the theft would be detected.
Freeports generally do not inquire about salvage provenance. Power ports have varying degrees of interest. Antaean commercial courts will sometimes enforce property claims against salvage sales if the original owner pursues the matter; the Antaean framework takes commercial property rights seriously even for derelicts.
Things That Appear Abandoned but Are Not
The most dangerous category of derelict hazard is the one that looks like an empty space and is not.
Security systems left in active mode are the most common example: automated responses to unauthorized presence that the departing crew did not disable, could not disable, or deliberately left running. A derelict with active security is a derelict that will respond to the crew in some way, and that response was designed for a context that no longer exists.
Other examples: a derelict claimed by a party that did not publicize the claim and left a watching presence; a derelict used as a cache by people who return periodically; a derelict where something biological has established itself in the maintainable sections; a derelict that one of the dead colony's former residents never quite left.
The operating assumption in a derelict should be that the crew's information about what is there is incomplete. It almost always is.
