Unclaimed Systems

The majority of systems on any navigational chart belong to no one.

Not because they are unknown. Some are precisely surveyed, named, and filed in triplicate at three different power registries. Not because they are unreachable. Most have viable seam arcs, passable corridors, and at least one documented approach. Unclaimed simply means that no recognized authority has planted a flag that anyone else accepts, maintained a standing presence, and filed a claim that survives legal challenge across multiple jurisdictions.

The practical difference between a claimed and an unclaimed system is this: when something goes wrong in a claimed system, there is someone to call. In an unclaimed system, the crew handles it themselves.

What Makes a System Unclaimed

Unclaimed status is not a single condition. It is a spectrum shaped by how much the powers know, how much they care, and how much it would cost to do anything about it.

Crews operating in unclaimed space talk about three broad categories.

Surveyed Unclaimed

A surveyed unclaimed system is known, mapped, and accessible. Its seam location has been charted, its stellar body cataloged, any notable resources recorded, and the file submitted to at least one power registry. The problem is that no claimant has done anything with it. In survey terms this is the Surveyed tier: a crew's own record reaches it only after two transits in both directions, a full Arrival Survey, and at least one Body Survey, stored in a Deep Archive and filed with a registry.

This happens for several reasons. The system may be resource-poor relative to the cost of settlement. It may sit at the end of a slow corridor where the transit time kills the economics. Two powers may both recognize each other's claim as illegitimate, leaving the system in permanent legal limbo. A corporate charter may have lapsed without the claim reverting cleanly.

Surveyed unclaimed systems are usually the safest kind to operate in. Charts are available, seam arcs are documented, and the hazards are at least partially known. The absence of authority cuts both ways: there are no inspection stations, but there is also no emergency response.

Charted Unclaimed

A charted unclaimed system has a known corridor endpoint and an accessible seam arc, but its interior has not been mapped in any systematic way. Survey crews have reached it, confirmed it exists, taken basic stellar readings, and filed the approach data. Nobody has done the slower, more expensive work of resource assessment, planetary approach surveys, or hazard mapping. In survey terms this is the Charted tier: one transit with a full Arrival Survey files a crew's own record here.

Charted systems are common in the Open Reach and on the far edges of any frontier. The corridor exists. The exit arc is documented. What lies inside is not well understood.

Operating in a charted unclaimed system requires assumption management. The seam works. Everything after the seam is a combination of standard stellar navigation and careful expectation.

Dark Systems

A dark system has no reliable data. Some have been visited once by a crew that never published their findings, or published only coordinates and a "nothing useful here" flag before disappearing. Others appear in old pre-war charts that no longer match current corridor drift. A few are known only because a ship emerged from an unexpected exit near one and noted the stellar reading before continuing on. In survey terms this is the Rumored tier at best: one transit with an Arrival Survey below threshold files there, and most dark-system records were never filed at all.

Dark systems are unpredictable in every meaningful sense. Seam quality is unknown. Corridor stability is unknown. Planetary and stellar hazards are unknown. Whether anyone else has already claimed it, settled it, or booby-trapped the approach is unknown.

Crews enter dark systems because the potential upside justifies the risk: an undiscovered resource field, a route shortcut, something lost that someone wants back. The calculus is always the same. The information gap is the danger, and the information gap is also the opportunity.

The Open Reach

The Open Reach is the far eastern arc beyond the Antaean League. On charts it looks like open space past the League's influence, and that description is accurate as far as it goes. The League has survey claims, corporate freeports, relay prospectors, private security contracts, and insurance-backed charters seeded through the Reach. The region sits too far from the League's centers of power to be reliably governed from there.

The result is a frontier governed by contract rather than by presence. A League-chartered corporation may hold exclusive extraction rights to a system. That right is meaningless if they cannot enforce it, and enforcement in the Open Reach costs money that most charters do not budget for. Independent crews operating in the Reach regularly encounter situations where several different parties hold paperwork for the same resource and none of them have a patrol ship within six weeks of travel.

What Brings Crews Here

The Open Reach attracts survey expeditions, extraction crews, relay prospectors, and people who want to operate without an authority looking over their shoulder. The League's commercial culture means that most Reach activity is driven by commercial logic rather than political maneuvering, which makes it more predictable than the Red Marches but less stable than the Meridian Verge.

Corporate freeports in the Reach are privately held and privately policed. They exist because a corporation decided the commercial opportunity justified building infrastructure. They survive because the corporation can defend them or because the reputation for dealing fairly keeps customers coming back.

Relay prospecting is a significant Reach industry. League interests are expanding relay coverage east, which means survey crews are paid to find viable seam arcs, assess corridor quality, and return with route data. A crew that finds a stable new seam in the Open Reach can sell that data to several buyers and name their price.

Typical Hazards

The Open Reach is dangerous primarily through isolation and commercial pressure rather than through active hostility. A ship that suffers a critical system failure three weeks from the nearest inhabited station has a logistics problem that no amount of piloting skill solves cleanly.

Corporate disputes turn violent in the Reach with some regularity. Two extraction crews working the same rock under competing charters, with no authority to adjudicate and no patrol ship to call, have limited options beyond negotiation and threat. Private security fleets operate without the oversight present in League core space, and their behavior reflects that.

The Reach also has genuine stellar hazards that have not been fully charted. The outer arc contains known radiation corridors, at least two reported gravitational anomalies that affect seam stability, and a cluster of systems near the far edge that survey crews call the Pale Fringe: a region where phase drive performance degrades in ways that are not fully explained and where three survey expeditions have returned reporting different findings from the same coordinates.

Lioris Station

Open Reach, Antaean corporate concession

Lioris Station hangs at the edge of reliable relay coverage, its docking ring crowded with survey ships waiting on data uplinks that arrive three days late when they arrive at all. The station was built as a commercial logistics hub for Open Reach operations and has grown into something more complicated: part freeport, part extraction depot, part relay junction, and part place where crews who cannot afford to go home yet wait out their options.

Population: Approximately 4,200 permanent residents; population swells to 7,000+ during active survey seasons Economy: Relay data brokerage, survey logistics, fuel and consumables trade, charter filing, light manufacturing Authority: Lioris Commercial Authority, a League-chartered private administration with four armed patrol cutters and a reputation for enforcing contracts vigorously and everything else loosely Docking: Scale 1 through 4; fees charged per day based on ship scale; no weapons restrictions on docked ships but discharge inside the station ring is a charter-revocation offense Notable:

  • The station administrator, Velline Cass, has held the position for eleven years by being the only person all three extraction corporations trust enough to adjudicate minor disputes

Hooks: A survey crew did not return from a charted run to a system four weeks out; their employer wants answers but not official involvement. / A relay data packet arrived addressed to a ship that has not docked here in two years, and someone is paying very well for it to be delivered without being opened.

Pallor's Rest

Open Reach, nominally Antaean chartered, practically independent

Pallor's Rest began as a fuel processing station on a gas giant's outer moon and grew into a small community when the fuel contract proved profitable enough to support families. The original company went under in a merger, and the settlement kept the fuel license through two rounds of corporate restructuring it was not a party to. The current residents do not know with certainty who holds their charter, and they have become very good at not asking.

Population: 1,800 permanent residents, mostly families with deep fuel-industry roots Economy: Fuel processing, gas giant extraction, small-scale hull maintenance, limited food cultivation in sealed greenhouse sections Authority: A community council of seven elected representatives with a station marshal and six deputies; no corporate security presence; the council handles permit disputes and violence with the same deliberate calm Docking: Scale 1 through 3; fuel prices are competitive; hull work is slow but reliable; weapons inspections are not conducted but crews are expected not to create problems Notable:

  • The station has a small medical facility that is unusually well-equipped for its population size; nobody explains where the equipment came from

Hooks: The charter clarification the League representative failed to deliver has apparently been decided at a high level, and someone needs to deliver the paperwork before another party delivers a different resolution. / A ship arrived six months ago, offloaded cargo the residents will not describe, and left without a logged destination; the cargo is still here.

Vekkar's Point

Open Reach, unclaimed, no charter

Vekkar's Point is not on any standard chart. It sits in the survey record as a charted unclaimed system with no notable resources and poor seam stability. What the survey record does not reflect is that someone built a station there, roughly forty years ago, and people have been quietly using it ever since. The station predates reliable relay coverage in this part of the Reach, which means it operates outside most commercial monitoring. It is not a smuggler haven in the organized sense; it is more that it exists in a gap where the question of legality has never quite been formalized.

Population: Approximately 350 permanent residents; highly transient additional population Economy: Grey-market refueling, unregistered cargo transfers, long-term storage for cargo that needs to stop appearing on manifests for a while, private ship maintenance Authority: Effective authority rests with the station's original builder families, who enforce a set of oral customs that have never been written down but are consistently applied; outsiders learn the rules by watching, and the first serious violation results in immediate departure at gunpoint Docking: Scale 1 through 3 only; fee is paid in usable trade goods or fuel equivalents, not currency; commercial transponders are expected to be non-broadcasting while docked Notable:

Hooks: A high-value cargo needs to move from Vekkar's Point to Lioris Station without appearing on any manifest; the cargo's owner will not say what it is. / A crew that stored something here six months ago is not coming back; their contact wants the stored item but cannot collect it personally.

The Glass Frontier

The Glass Frontier is the flat eastern border of the Irnan Directorate against the convex western contact of the Shoiyan Concord. The name comes from spacers who work the crossing: the border is clean on charts, hard to cross legally, and never as transparent as either government claims.

From a political standpoint, the Glass Frontier is a surveillance-intensive zone of inspection corridors, biosecurity stations, stack-trafficking interdiction, research-theft countermeasures, and careful diplomatic denials. Both the Directorate and the Concord maintain significant patrol and intelligence infrastructure along this border. Both claim their enforcement is defensive. Both are correct.

The Directorate is concerned about continuity stack trafficking, the unauthorized export of Shoiyan bioengineering technology, the movement of defectors who carry sensitive institutional knowledge, and any suggestion that Shoiyan influence is expanding through commercial relationships rather than declared borders.

The Concord is concerned about Irnan industrial espionage, the movement of their citizens without proper stack registration, illegal clinical research operating outside Concord medical ethics frameworks, and anything that might disrupt the quiet commercial relationships both powers are not supposed to be having with each other.

What Brings Crews Here

The Glass Frontier pays well for couriers willing to cross it in either direction without too many questions. Defectors are a steady if irregular cargo. Scientific data, medical research, and engineering schematics that are technically controlled under export law move through the frontier constantly, carried by crews who are paid enough to accept the risk.

Legal crossings are heavily scrutinized but functional. The Directorate's inspection corridor at Merrinex Station processes thousands of ships per year, and most of them are legitimate commercial traffic that simply experiences delays, fees, and the occasional invasive scan.

The grey market here is less about smuggling physical goods and more about moving information, people, and credentials. The difference between legal and illegal on the Glass Frontier is often a matter of which form was filed with which registry.

Named Locations

Merrinex Station

Glass Frontier, Irnan Directorate jurisdiction

Merrinex Station is the primary legal crossing point on the Irnan side of the Glass Frontier. It is large, bureaucratic, and understaffed relative to the traffic volume it processes. The inspection bays have a permanent queue. The customs clerks have seen everything and react to nothing with surprise. The waiting area sells food that is technically adequate.

Population: 12,000 station personnel and their families; transient ship population averages 3,000 to 5,000 at any given time Economy: Customs processing, inspection services, approved commercial transit, licensed broker services, legal relay transmission Authority: Irnan Directorate Customs and Border Authority; military picket of two corvettes and four cutters; station commander Director Vaela Sorn is known for technically impeccable decisions that are practically extremely inconvenient for anyone trying to move quickly Docking: Scale 1 through 5; mandatory inspection of all cargo; fees structured by cargo type and tonnage; process takes 12 hours minimum, typically 3 to 5 days; expedited processing fees exist and are significant Notable:

  • The data escrow office handles sealed information transfers between parties who do not want to be seen exchanging information directly; the office keeps no records of who used it or why

Threnody

Glass Frontier, nominally Shoiyan administrative territory, practically autonomous

Threnody is a small station that exists in the gap between Shoiyan administrative zones and Irnan patrol coverage. Neither power built it. A private medical research firm established it forty years ago, did its research, lost its funding, and left. The people who stayed built something sustainable from the leftover infrastructure. Threnody now processes transit, sells fuel, provides medical services of unusual quality, and asks very few questions about the nature of the cargoes passing through it.

Population: 890 permanent residents; unusually high proportion of medically trained personnel Economy: Medical services, fuel and consumables, transit services, quiet information brokerage, data archiving Authority: A community elected administrator; no military presence; the station's medical director holds effective social authority through the community's reliance on the medical facility Docking: Scale 1 through 3; no inspection; fees paid in credit or trade; medical services available at significantly below standard rates for those who cannot pay standard rates Notable:

  • The medical facility maintains continuity stack reading equipment of Shoiyan manufacture that predates the current Concord export restrictions; its availability is not advertised

  • An anonymous medical archive from a discontinued Shoiyan research program lives on Threnody's servers; the archive is accessed by researchers from multiple powers who all believe their access is exclusive

Hooks: A researcher disappeared inside Threnody's medical facility while attempting to access the archive; their employer wants to know what they found before it becomes anyone else's problem. / A continuity stack cube arrived as cargo with no sender information and no destination claim; whoever shipped it is presumably interested in it being read.

No Man's Land

No Man's Land is the empty space east of the Meridian Verge where no reliable slipstream corridors cross. It is not unclaimed because nobody has looked. Several survey expeditions have tried to find viable seam arcs and come back with the same report: there is nothing useful here, and the attempt cost them more than it was worth.

What No Man's Land actually contains is a volume of space where the ordinary navigational assumptions that make interstellar travel practical break down. Corridor drift patterns are inconsistent with the models used elsewhere. Survey probes have returned anomalous readings. Three expeditions have failed to find any viable seam where the models predicted one, and two expeditions found what might be seam precursors in locations that make no navigational sense.

The practical effect is that No Man's Land is a dead zone between the Meridian Verge and the Khatar Line. Ships cannot pass through it efficiently, which means the Verge and the Khatar Line are not connected by a direct route. Traffic that needs to move between those regions goes around, through Irnan or Jaziri space, or through the Verge's eastern edge where corridor quality is already degraded.

This matters politically because No Man's Land creates a buffer. Irnan and Jaziri patrols from the Verge cannot reinforce the Khatar Line quickly. Fleet movements from the Caliphate toward the Verge have to come through established corridors that are visible. Nobody can push a fleet through No Man's Land because the fleet would not arrive anywhere useful.

What Brings Crews Here

People go to No Man's Land for three reasons: they are lost, they are hiding, or they are looking for something.

The hiding use case is significant. No Man's Land is unreachable by patrol ships on any practical timeline. A crew that enters the edge of the zone through a degraded Verge corridor and then goes dark is effectively invisible for as long as they can manage their consumables. Emergency drifts, secret meetings, caches that need to be unreachable, and transmissions that cannot be traced all happen in the margins of No Man's Land.

The looking use case is less well understood. Three separate expeditions have been commissioned in the last decade specifically to investigate the anomalous seam readings. Two returned with contradictory data. One did not return at all.

Named Locations

The Drift Margin

No Man's Land edge, no jurisdiction

The Drift Margin is less a location than a practice: the habit of treating the eastern edge of the Meridian Verge as a temporary haven by drifting into the first few light-weeks of No Man's Land. Ships anchor near rogue bodies, ghost probes, and abandoned survey markers to wait out patrols, conduct meetings, or simply rest outside observation. There is no settlement here. There is, however, a loose network of knowledge about which rogue body has a stable approach vector, which abandoned survey probe still has a working short-range beacon, and which stretch of the edge is least sensor-visible from the Verge.

Population: Zero permanent; highly variable transient Economy: No commercial economy; used as a waypoint for informal exchanges Authority: None Docking: No facilities; ships anchor against rogue bodies or hold position Notable:

  • An abandoned survey platform called Marker Seven has power remaining in its emergency cells and a short-range comms unit; crews who know its coordinates use it as a dead-drop point
  • The edge of No Man's Land produces consistent false-positive returns on standard long-range sensors, making it difficult for patrol ships to distinguish a real contact from instrument noise
  • At least two wrecks are known to be somewhere in the Drift Margin from ships that attempted corridor entry and lost navigational coherence; nobody has successfully recovered them

Hooks: A contact wants to meet somewhere that cannot be monitored; they have specified the Drift Margin and a specific rogue-body coordinate. / A ship went dark in the Drift Margin forty days ago; its crew owed people money and the people want either the crew or the ship.

Station Zero

No Man's Land interior, contested salvage claim

Station Zero is the name salvage crews have given to a structure detected three years ago by a survey vessel that subsequently lost power and was recovered without its navigation logs. The structure is believed to be a pre-war installation of uncertain origin, possibly a navigation research platform from the period before the current corridor maps were established, possibly something else. Two salvage expeditions have attempted to reach it. The first found the structure but could not dock and returned. The second found nothing at the coordinates the first expedition logged.

Population: Unknown; possibly zero Economy: Unknown; potentially significant if the structure contains pre-war navigation data or research archives Authority: Three salvage firms have filed competing claims based on different interpretations of unclaimed-structure law; none has established presence; the claims are currently in arbitration Docking: Unknown Notable:

  • The coordinates filed by the first expedition and the nothing found by the second expedition differ by margins consistent with either natural drift, navigation error, or deliberate misdirection
  • A pre-war navigation research platform would contain corridor mapping data predating the current political boundaries; this is of intense interest to at least two powers for reasons they are not publicizing
  • The survey vessel that first detected the structure has since been purchased by an unknown party through a shell company; the original crew is not reachable

Other Unclaimed Regions

Beyond the named zones, unclaimed space exists throughout the known atlas in pockets, dead ends, and transition gaps.

Corridor dead ends produce unclaimed systems naturally. A corridor that ends near a resource-poor system with no onward seam has no commercial value, and unclaimed systems at dead ends accumulate without anyone particularly wanting to change that status.

Power transition zones are the systems that fall between two powers' effective patrol reach. They may be formally claimed by one power, formally contested by another, and practically governed by neither. Ships in these transition zones encounter the same practical reality as ships in genuinely unclaimed space: self-sufficiency is assumed and emergency response is not.

Collapsed route pockets occur when a corridor drifts far enough that a formerly connected system becomes practically isolated. The original power may maintain a nominal claim, but if the seam has shifted beyond practical use, the claim is hollow. A few settled colonies have found themselves in this position and become functionally unclaimed while retaining their original political designation on outdated charts.

Operating in Unclaimed Space

The practical experience of operating in unclaimed space differs from power space in ways that are easy to describe and important to internalize.

There are no relays where there are no settled systems. Phased relay nodes require installation, maintenance, and power. They sit near established seams because that is where the traffic is. A crew in unclaimed space is working on whatever information they carried with them. News from the Meridian Verge is days or weeks old. A warning about a patrol change in Irnan space arrived too late to be relevant. The crew does not know it yet.

There is no rescue. Emergency beacons work by transmitting a distress signal that someone responds to. In unclaimed space, the response time is measured in weeks if there is any response at all. A ship with a drive failure in a surveyed unclaimed system is not stranded for hours. It is stranded until another ship happens to pass through or until the crew solves the problem themselves.

There is no law. This is less a freedom than a responsibility. Disputes are resolved by the parties to the dispute, by whatever precedent the local community has established, or by force. A crew that harms another crew in unclaimed space faces the consequences of that harm from whoever cares about it, not from an impartial authority.

Equipment assumptions change. Standard ship inventories are calibrated for travel between inhabited systems where resupply is a realistic option. Extended unclaimed space operations require additional consumables, extended emergency cells, redundant drive components, and the ability to effect field repairs without parts or infrastructure support. The most common mistake crews make in unclaimed space is applying core-world assumptions to a situation where core-world support does not exist.

Survey and Claim Process

Claiming a system requires demonstrating that you found it, that you can reach it reliably, and that some authority is willing to recognize the claim.

Survey Requirements

A legal survey requires confirmed seam arc location with navigational data sufficient for independent verification, stellar body catalog with primary star classification and any notable planetary or resource data, hazard assessment covering known stellar and navigational risks, and at least one full transit from seam entry to system interior and return.

The survey must be conducted by a registered survey crew carrying credentials from a recognized power or corporate registry. An independent crew can file the survey, but claim registration requires power or corporate sponsorship.

Claim Filing

A filed claim is submitted to the relevant power registry for the zone where the system sits, or to a neutral registry such as the Antaean arbitration courts if the zone has no clear power affiliation.

A filed claim grants the claimant exclusive development rights for the registered resources, priority survey access, and the right to exclude others from the registered resource zones. It does not grant territorial sovereignty. It does not extend to any inhabited population in the system. It does not survive indefinitely without development activity.

Simultaneous Claim Conflicts

Multiple claims are filed simultaneously or near-simultaneously with some regularity. Competing claims are typically resolved by the power or neutral registry through priority of filing date, quality of survey data, evidence of prior presence, and political considerations that are rarely made explicit.

In practice, if two parties file claims for the same system and one of them has a ship present in the system when the dispute is being adjudicated, that party's claim tends to receive more favorable treatment.

What a Filed Claim Actually Means

A filed claim is a legal document, not a patrol ship. If another crew establishes a competing presence in a claimed unclaimed system and the claimant cannot enforce their exclusion rights, the claim provides legal recourse after the fact. That recourse requires finding a court with jurisdiction, demonstrating the violation, and collecting a judgment from a party that may not recognize the judgment's authority.

Claim enforcement in unclaimed space is the claimant's problem. The powers will support legitimate claims when it is convenient and when they have patrol assets available. When it is neither, the claimant deals with it.
